Invest in Solar Energy in PA's Budget

Caring for God's creation and accessing renewable energy is a communal effort!

Our church, then, views the present reality and the future we are moving into with grave concern but also is empowered by a vision of flourishing and hope as God’s invitation to join God’s action toward healing the earth. - The ELCA Social Message on Earth's Climate Crisis

As PA legislators finalize the 2026 budget, it is imperative that they support investment in solar programs that promote clean energy. We have two proven programs that will benefit communities across the Commonwealth as they seek to invest in solar projects. Solar for Schools was a huge success last year, and a similar investment in this year's budget will be well-spent. The Solar for All money has already been granted by the federal government, and is simply waiting on legislative approval to be distributed. Write to your lawmakers to encourage them to include these investments in the final PA budget!

•    Solar For Schools: Earlier this spring, 73 schools across PA were given grants to install solar panels, which will help them save money on their utility bills and help get more solar online. According to the Department of Community and Economic Development, 88 applications were received requesting more than $88 million. This is more than three times the $25 million appropriation. The General Assembly should allocate at least another $25 million this year so that more schools can go solar.

•    Solar for All: Pennsylvania was granted $156 million in federal dollars from the Solar For All program to finance rooftop solar installations that will save consumers money, but legislative approval to release the funds was made a requirement in the 2024 budget agreement. Pennsylvania’s legislators have until June 30, 2025- or a final budget agreement- to release millions in funding so that their constituents may tap into homegrown solar energy to cut energy costs. If the General Assembly fails to act that money has to be returned to the Federal government.
